5 essential qualities that the most effective interviewers possess
The ultimate goal is to select an individual who will meet the expectations of the position, and in most cases be able to retain them long-term. Here, we’ll focus on the most essential qualities I’ve found effective interviewers possess.
1. Interviewers that Understand the Candidate's Perspective
You must take the time to understand the perspective of the candidate being interviewed. It is just as important that the candidate assess whether the position, company, and culture, is a good fit for them, not simply you assessing whether they are good fit. In addition, you should be able to understand the position you are hiring for, especially if that position is ultimately supervised by another person. This is essential for recruiters as they support the staffing needs of their clients. Proper perspective leads to better decisions at every step of the process.
2. Interviewers that have Mastered Communication Skills
Effective communication comes down to two things:
- You must be able to communicate in a way the audience can understand. It is not enough to simply say the words and expect your audience truly understands what you’re trying to convey.
- You must be a good listener. Listening requires that you make an effort to understand the message from the perspective that the person communicating is coming from. Typically probing questions are required to ensure that understanding.
3. Interviewers that are Prepared
Preparation is critical to successful decisions. It is important that you take the time to properly prepare yourself to conduct the interview. This includes understanding the market, the industry, and the available labor pool you are hiring in. You also need to understand what skills are required in the position you’re hiring for and gain a basic level of understanding about the candidate’s experience and work history. You’ll get a deeper understanding during the interview, so don’t read too much into the information included in the resume or job application.
4. Interviewers that Exercise Clarity in Judgment
There needs to be an ability to see through the smoke screen and focus on the actual points that matter to success in the position. Purposely trying to make the candidate comfortable based on the belief that they’ll open up and expose their true self
, is a great approach. However, you cannot purposely try to make the candidate comfortable, and then during the interview determine they were too comfortable, ultimately making that your reason to not move forward with the candidate.
5. Interviewers that are Strategic in their Approach
If you have the right perspective, communicate well, take the time to prepare, and apply clarity in your judgment, you’ve set the foundation for developing a solid strategy. Effective interviewers don’t simply show up and conduct the interview. They have a hiring strategy developed that is aligned with the organization’s goals.
